District Attorney David M. Hoovler and Town of New Windsor Police Chief Daniel Valeri Announce Arrestsin Long-Term Narcotics Investigation

Two New Windsor Men Charged with Narcotics and Weapons Offenses

Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler and Town of New Windsor Police Chief Daniel Valeri announced that Steven Gordon, age 58, and John Maines, ages 66, both of New Windsor, have been arrested after an investigation into narcotics trafficking throughout the Town of New Windsor and surrounding areas. Gordon was arraigned in the Centralized Arraignment Part and remanded to the Orange County Jail without bail.  Maines was also arraigned in the Centralized Arraignment Part and remanded to the Orange County Jail in lieu of bail.

The Town of New Windsor Police conducted the ten (10) month-long narcotics investigation in collaboration with the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, the New York State Police Violent Gang and Narcotics Enforcement Team (VGNET), the Town of Newburgh Police Department and the Hudson Valley Safe Streets Task Force of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.  The investigation culminated with the execution of a judicially-authorized search warrant on a residence in the Town of NewWindsor.  During the search warrant execution, police officers recovered two loaded handguns, an assault style rifle, as well as quantities of crack cocaine and fentanyl.  Also recovered were scales and packaging materials used to prepare narcotics for sale, as well as nearly $20,000 in United States currency.

“Narcotics continue to be trafficked by high-level dealers in and around our community,” said District Attorney David M. Hoovler. “It takes the coordinated actions of various law enforcement agencies working together, such as was demonstrated in this case, in order to interrupt the drug trade.  I am thankful to all the law enforcement agencies that dedicated their resources to this case. I will continue to allocate resources and manpower to these investigations which are critical to ensuring the safety of our citizens.”

“I would like to thank our federal, state, county and municipal law enforcement partners for their valued support and assistance in this case. The teamwork and coordination displayed by all agencies involved is certainly commendable,” said Town of New Windsor Police Chief Daniel Valeri.

The case is being prosecuted by Chief Trial Assistant DistrictAttorney Richard Moran.

A criminal charge is merely an allegation by the police that a defendant has committed a violation of the criminal law, and it is not evidence of guilt. All defendants are presumed innocent and entitled to a fair trial, during which it will be the State of New York’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
