Newburgh Man Sentenced to 8 Years in Prison for Selling Heroin to an Undercover Officer

Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced that on Friday, April 19, 2024, Divine Williams, age 37, of Newburgh, was sentenced to eight (8) years in prison to be followed by three (3) years of post-release supervision in connection with his previous guilty plea in Orange County Court to Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the ThirdDegree.  The conviction is the fifth felony drug conviction for Williams.

As alleged in documents filed and statements made in court, on at least two dates in March of 2021, Williams sold substances later confirmed to be heroin to an undercover officer with the New York State Police.  At the plea proceedings, Williams admitted to possessing heroin with the intent to sell it.

District Attorney Hoovler thanked the New York State Police for their investigation which led to the arrest of Williams.

“Recidivist drug dealers who persist in their deadly actions must face significant incarceration in order to ensure the safety of our communities,” said District Attorney David M. Hoovler. “The battle against the surge of drugs on our streets starts and ends with proactive policing, coupled with prosecutors who are ready, willing and able to prove offenders’ guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.  The prison sentence imposed in this case will ensure thisnarcotics trafficker is unable to continue to spread his poison in our County.”

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Alexis Gregory.

This criminal charge is merely an allegation that a defendant has committed a violation of the criminal law, and it is not evidence of guilt. All defendants are presumed innocent and entitled to a fair trial, during which it will be the State of New York’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
