District Attorney Hoovler and Sheriff DuBois to Speak at an Event to Show Support for City of Newburgh First Responders which will be held on Friday, March 6, 2020, at 10:00 AM, at the corner of Liberty Street and Broadway in the City of Newburgh

Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler and Orange County Sheriff Carl E. DuBois announced that they will speak at an event in support of rank and file City of Newburgh Police Officers and Firefighters. The event is scheduled to start on Friday March 6, 2020, at 10:00 AM, at the corner of Liberty Street and Broadway in the City of Newburgh.

The event supporting City of Newburgh Police Officers and Firefighters comes in the aftermath of budget cuts and lay-offs at each of those agencies, and what many rank and file first responders perceive as a more challenging work environment. In addition to District Attorney Hoovler and Sheriff DuBois, it is expected that the event will be attended by residents, business owners, and others from the greater Newburgh area, who rely on professional City of Newburgh first responders when they are in the City conducting business, pursuing educational opportunities, seeking medical treatment or just living their lives. District Attorney Hoovler is scheduled to speak at approximately 10:30.

“It is fitting that we express our appreciation to the City of Newburgh Police Officers and Firefighters who risk their lives every day to keep City residents, business owners, visitors, and students safe,” said District Attorney Hoovler. “Being a first responder in the City of Newburgh has always been challenging, and the overwhelming majority of our police officers and firefighters exhibit the highest degree of competence, professionalism, bravery and compassion as they perform their lifesaving functions. Recent budget cuts, layoffs and other issues, including statutory changes, have made first responders’ jobs more challenging. No first responder deserves to be met with threats or verbal abuse as they attempt do their jobs, especially in this more challenging environment. Now, more than ever, it is appropriate that we let our hard-working police officers and firefighters know that we recognize and appreciate the risks they take to keep us safe.”

Sheriff Carl E. DuBois stated, “Elected officials expect our first responders to go through extensive training, work all hours, perform in a professional manner, and keep their emotions under control. They set the example for others to follow. It is not unreasonable to expect those same elected officials to act in the same manner.”
