Defendant Sentenced to 7 Years in State Prison for Illegal Handgun Sales

Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced on that on Thursday, February 10, 2022, Daniel Cabral, 34, of Sparrowbush, was sentenced in Orange County Court to seven years in state prison, and five years post-release supervision, for illegally selling three handguns in the Town of Deerpark in July 2021. On December 13, 2021, Cabral had pleaded guilty to Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree for possessing guns sold to an undercover police officer.

Prosecutors had argued that on July 15, 2021, Cabral sold a Glock 27 .40 caliber pistol and ammunition to an undercover police officer for $500. It was also alleged that on July 19, 2021, Cabral sold a Ruger .357 caliber revolver to an undercover officer for $550, and finally that on July 20, 2021, Cabral sold a Taurus 9 mm. pistol and matching ammunition to an undercover officer for $600.

District Attorney Hoovler thanked the City of Port Jervis Police Department, Orange County Drug Task Force and the Town of Deerpark Police Department for their investigation and the arrest of Cabral.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Neal Eriksen.

“As this case demonstrates, those who engage in illegal weapons sales risk lengthy incarceration,” said District Attorney David M. Hoovler. “We are only too aware of the intolerable level of gun violence plaquing many of our communities. While there is no problem with law abiding citizens responsibly owning firearms, illegal gun sales such as the ones made by this defendant only serve to put guns in the wrong hands, with often tragic results. I applaud the City of Port Jervis Police Department, the Orange County Drug Task Force and the Town of Deerpark Police Department for taking proactive steps to decrease gun violence.”
